The University of Canterbury, Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha, is a leading teaching and research institution and a national centre for excellence in Information and Communications Technology. We have a recognised impressive international profile in research, learning and advanced scholarship in the sciences, engineering, arts, education, law and business. Christchurch is widely regarded as the “hi-tech” centre of New Zealand, and is supported by UC’s strengths in this area and also by the fact that UC is home to the New Zealand ICT Innovation Institute, the Human Interface Technology Laboratory of New Zealand, and the most powerful scientific research computer in the Southern Hemisphere “BlueFern”. Other leading research centres include The Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies, The National Centre for Research on Europe and Gateway Antarctica.
The Colleges
The University consists of five colleges each containing a number of Schools/Departments and Research Centres;
and a School of Law.
We offer our students (currently over 16,000), who come to us from around the world, a stimulating range of courses, internationally respected lecturers and cutting-edge research facilities. Our graduates are found in top jobs and graduate institutions the world over.
We are the second largest employer in Christchurch with 632 permanent academic staff and
